Joaquim Rodríguez and Katusha Team continue in Ardennes

Tuesday, April 16th, 2013

Out of the tube, onto the bike: after his Crash at the Amstel Gold Race last Sunday, the doctors cleared Joaquim Rodríguez to start at the Fléche Wallone and Liège-Bastogne-Liège.

A CT-scan revealed a severe contusion on his thigh, which resulted in a big question mark concerning his participation in the two remaining Ardennes-classics.

VIDEO: Purito on his way back to No. 1

Today, on Tuesday, the Catalan rider did a two hour training, after which he decided to participate as Katusha’s leader in both remaining Ardennes classics on his Aeroad CF. Will he bis able to cross the finish line on the Muur de Huy as a winner again this year?

“Tomorrow I will take part to La Flèche Wallonne with the number 1 in my back and that gives me strong motivations, but I’m also aware I’m not in my top shape and so it will be very hard to encore last edition’s victory. You must be perfect on every point of view in order to win these classic races. I have to admit I’m a little bit disappointed, because everybody knows that for me this week is one of the most important aims of the season. I hope to recover my top shape for Liège-Bastogne-Liège, my favorite competition. I will give my best tomorrow too, but I’ve already spoken with my teammates and I will be at their disposal in order to take the best possible result for Katusha” – said Joaquim Rodríguez.

Ardennes-week: Do it one more time Purito!

Thursday, April 11th, 2013

Muur de Huy with a gradient of 26% – the lactic acid fills the legs of the riders. Then the turbo charger of Joaqium “Purito” Rodríguez kicks in. Purito already showed last year just how it’s done and scooped a fantastic victory at Flèche Wallone on his Aeroad CF.

This year the climber from Catalonia is again our man from Team Katusha for the three Ardennes classics Amstel Gold Race – Flèche Wallone – Liège-Bastogne-Liège.

Canyon bikes are built for winners!
It’s obvious that Canyon bikes feel at home on the tough little climbs in the Ardennes if the results they have achieved over the last few years are anything to go by. In 2011 Purito just missed out on the big coup finishing second in both the Amstel Gold Race and Fleche Wallone. He was only narrowly beaten by Philippe Gilbert, who also celebrated all his major triumphs on a Canyon bike.

In Belgium and the Netherlands Purito was supported by his countryman Dani Moreno. The explosive puncheur, who finished 5th in the Vuelta in 2012, has escorted Rodríguez through the Ardennes countryside over the last two years. Katusha is very well equipped for the challenges ahead.

Muur de Huy is the killer climb

The opener of the famous Ardennes triple is the Amstel Gold Race on Sunday 14 April. The 250 kilometer classic race is studded with 33 short, stiff climbs. The pros must overcome over 4000 metres of elevation. The killer climb will again be the Cauberg, which with a maximum gradient of 11%, is at the same time one of the toughest. From there it’s just a further two kilometres to the finish in Valkenburg.

The second race of the Ardennes week is the Flèche Wallonne, which takes place on Wednesday, 17 April. In contrast to the Amstel Gold Race, Flèche Wallonne follows a route through the Belgian Ardennes. The most crucial and also the final climb is the Muur de Huy, which is 1.3 kms long and has a gradient of 26%. The “Wall” is the terrain in which Purito really feels at home!

Storming the Ardennes triple

The pros hardly have time to draw breath after such a demanding race before Liège-Bastogne-Liège on Sunday, 21 April tops off the Ardennes classic series. It is the oldest one-day race on the pro calendar which is still run and is regarded as one of the toughest in cycling due to its hilly profile through the Wallonian Ardennes.

The 260 kilometre route is littered with numerous little climbs. The most famous of them is the Cote de la Redoute, which is two kilometres long and has a maximum gradient of 20%. ¡Venga Purito!

The following Katusha riders will take part in the three races during the Ardennes week:
Giampaolo Caruso (ITA), Alexandr Kolobnev (RUS), Alberto Losada (ESP), Daniel Moreno (ESP), Joaquim Rodriguez (ESP), Simon Spilak (SVN), Angel Vicioso (ESP), Eduard Vorganov (RUS).

It will be an exciting and strenuous week for Katusha and we wish our team the best of luck and above all success!

Katusha – double success in Spain and Italy

Thursday, March 21st, 2013

Just a few minutes after the Katusha team’s fantastic victory at yesterday’s team time-trial at the Settimana Internazionale Coppi e Bartali in Italy, Joaqium “Purito” Rodríguez scooped an outstanding 3rd place in the Tour of Catalonia. He was quite obviously motivated by the WorldTour trophy, which he had received on Monday because he was always very alert on the final climb and was also able to ride himself into 3rd place in the general classification.

“It was a hard climb, it looked like we had a slow pace, but actually it was very cold and hard instead. In the end Movistar riders were the majority of the group, so they could control the final part of the stage. I was slipstreaming Quintana, but in the end I could not follow him. Anyway, I am satisfied. In stage like this it could have been much worse, but instead I managed to gain an advantage over my rivals. I’m in good shape, so I am satisfied”, said Purito.

Keep your fingers crossed for Purito and join in our competition, where you can win a Meet & Greet with Purito at the spring classic event Liège–Bastogne–Liège.

At the Settimana Internazionale Coppi e Bartal in Italy Katusha won its first time-trial of the season on the new Speedmax CF. The race was staged in a new way for the first time this year with each of the 25 competing teams being split into two groups and starting independently of each other. The times of the fastest two riders in each team were added together and at the end Katusha was 5 seconds faster than the Cannondale team in 2nd place. Maxim Belkov from Katusha now leads in the general classification ahead of his teammate Sergei Chernetckii.

“I am really happy about the victory. We prepared very well for this time-trial and we were focused on the best result possible. And we did it. Now, I am also the leader of the race and I will try to do my best in the next few days. I think the result we showed today is important not only for Katusha, but for the whole Russian Global Cycling Project, too. Today we had young Russian riders on the squad, who are just starting their professional careers! We, the riders with a lot of experience are proud of that.
On behalf of the whole team I would like to thank the project management and Igor Makarov personally for all the things he does for Russian cycling and that Katusha has the possibility to take part in and win the world’s best pro races” – Maxim Belkov.

Even though Purito certainly won’t be lacking in motivation we have provided him with a new Aeroad CF, which is sure to draw attention from fans and riders (hopefully who have been dropped by Purito) alike.

Leanda Cave’s season debut on Canyon bike at Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon event

Thursday, February 28th, 2013

The double triathlon world champion Leanda Cave’s season debut on a Canyon bike will be at the 33rd installment of the Escape from Alcatraz event, which takes place on 3rd March 2013. Leanda Cave is currently the world’s best female triathlete and also last year’s winner of the Escape from Alcatraz event. This season the 34-year old wants to repeat her success and make a winning start to her season. For her season debut Leanda has put her faith in her Canyon Aeroad CF with its special triathlon set-up so that she can once again triumph in this truly legendary triathlon.

The event starts just off the Island of Alcatraz in San Francisco. After the jump into the water off a ferry the competitors have a 2.5km swim across the Bay of San Francisco to contend with before they reach the Marina Green Beach where they transfer to the cycling section. On the hilly and winding 29km course Leanda will show her rivals a clean pair of heels on her super fast Canyon Aeroad race machine. After the transfer to the final discipline the competitors must complete a 12km run. The course, which runs along the Golden Gate Bridge, has all the prerequisites for a truly exciting finale to the event. Sections on sand, changes in direction and stretches that are tailor-made for speed await the competitors.

Leanda Cave is hoping to cross the finish-line in first place on Marina Green Beach in a time of under two hours and celebrate her victory with her fans.

Cave’s Aeroad CF with its triathlon set-up is tailor made for the most diverse and fast competitive events. The optimised aerodynamics in combination with the compact frame and the classic handlebar design deliver significantly better handling. In addition, the flatter seat angle means that the race bike is less top-heavy and thus delivers a distinctly better distribution of weight between the front and rear wheels. The undoubted strengths of this bike have already been demonstrated by the pros on the road, who achieved first place in the UCI world ranking on the Aeroad CF in 2011 and 2012. Leanda Cave crowned her successful 2012 season by winning two world championships. Leanda scooped victory in the Ironman 70.3 distance in Las Vegas and the Ironman world championships on Hawaii, making her the Queen of Kona. With her victory in both world championships Leanda Cave is the first athlete in history who has won both world titles in one season.

Post-race, the delighted rider from Verhnaya Pyshma, Russia explained, “The team gave me a chance to try and go for the win today and the whole race was set up for me. I am really grateful to the team for that.
During the final part of the race I said to the team that I am ok and can try to win, so, my teammates did everything possible to help me and get me into an ideal position for the sprint finish. I was waiting for the mass sprint, but a rider from Europcar attacked before. I managed to get on his wheel and was able to save energy. In the last few meters I started my sprint to win. I am really happy that I was able to win today”, explained Tsatevich. “I came to Belgium a little bit earlier to train and that paid off today.”

Katusha Team Sports Director Gennady Mikhaylov said, “Today, we planned our race especially for Alexei. During the whole race the team worked hard for Alexei, and he did a great uphill sprint for the win. We all are very happy. I think the fact that we finally got our World Tour license has given us additional motivation in races”.

Team Katusha receives WorldTour licence

Friday, February 15th, 2013

We are pleased to announce that the Court of Arbitration for Sport has upheld the appeal filed by Team Katusha and granted the team a World Tour licence for the 2013 season.

Tempräsentation Katusha am 19. Dezember 2012 in Italien

In December the Russian Global Cycling Project Team’s application for a licence was turned down despite second place in the world ranking for the team and first place for Joaquim “Purito“ Rodríguez in the individual rider standings. The Russian racing team promptly filed an appeal at the Court of Arbitration for Sport. The following weeks were plagued by speculation and uncertainty which, however, was not able to dent the unwavering fighting spirit and will to win of the team. And Purito demonstrated again just yesterday that he is going to be one of the top riders in 2013 by winning stage four at the Tour of Oman. The team led by Rodriguez will be in action until 16 February in Oman and battling it out for podium places.

Since the beginning of 2012 Canyon has been the official bike supplier to the Russian pro team. Their team bikes are the Aeroad CF, the best bike of the UCI- World Tour 2011 and 2012, the completely redesigned Ultimate CF SLX, which impresses with outstanding values and a dream weight, and also the Speedmax CF, which is one of the fastest and best time-trial bikes in the world. These are all ideal prerequisites in the quest for podium places.
We are really looking forward to our second season with Katusha.

Introducing Canyon Factory Enduro Teamrider Joe Barnes

Wednesday, February 13th, 2013

Wherever they turn up, there is always something going on. Joe Barnes and the “Dudes of Hazzard” are an unbeatable combo and we therefore got them on board very quickly. Joe as the official rider of the Canyon Factory Enduro Team and his colleagues Liam Moynihan and Fergus Lamb – who are also riding Canyon bikes – will support the team throughout the season. The “Dudes of Hazzard” already caused quite a stir on the enduro scene last season and in 2013 the fun-loving and adventurous Scotsman together with the Canyon Factory Enduro Team in the battle for podium places.

Ladies and Gentlemen, we proudly present Mr. Joe Barnes

Joe Barnes mit seinem Van

Date of birth: 11.06.88
Domicile: Fort Williams (Scotland)

Hi there Joe, where are you hanging out at the moment? Have you done a runner from the good old Scottish winter?

I am at home in Fort William at the moment. You are correct, the Scottish winter is something to run from and I have been away twice this winter already. One week in Tenerife and one week in Mallorca. Both trips were great fun and a good chance to train and get used to my new bike. It feels nice to be home now, though, doing what I like best, building a new trail and having fun riding bikes in the mud.

As a “Dude of Hazzard” you really stick out like a sore thumb on the scene and are always painting the town red. Now you’ve got all these new responsibilities towards the team, how are you going to juggle everything?

It is funny you should say that as we are actually all very reserved people and generally keep ourselves to ourselves. The number one thing is always professionalism at the races as we are all very competitive. The Lurid Van and comedy scooters at races do stand out though! You wouldn’t want to walk to the shop when you could drive the scooter, it’s all about saving energy;) With Canyon also supporting Liam and Ferg from “the Dudes” it should add to the family atmosphere and I think I will fit in well with the Canyon family and new team surroundings.

In May the Enduro World Series gets underway. What are your aims and how do you see your role in the team?

I can’t wait for the first race in Italy. As it is the first year the World Series is being run I hope to take my strong race craft from racing DH and adapt to the new format straight away. I have always ridden as a privateer in the past so riding for a team set up will provide some great benefits to me, with technical support and also the chat brought on by a team atmosphere. I hope that I can take my own style to the team, gel well with my team mates and get some top results.

Enduro is a way of life. That’s obvious when one watches your videos. What’s a race weekend with the “Dudes” really like then?

We get to the venue and spend about an hour driving round in circles deciding the ultimate location to park. Wind direction, south facing, distance to pits and remoteness all to be considered. Then the scooter comes out and we take it in turns driving about, getting to know our surroundings/having fun. On track, we walk and ride everything a lot and always take line choice really seriously, discussing everything later that evening. Once the biking is done the ping pong table comes out and a quick game to relax usually happens. Potatoes for dinner and then a film in the van to finish the day off nicely. Once the race is done we slowly pack up and are always the last to leave. We really enjoy our racing, competition and also the fun to be had when not peddling your heart out.

Joe Barnes in Action auf Mallorca / Foto:Dudes of Hazzard

You’ve already rocked a few trails on your Strive. What do think of the bike so far? What’s the perfect enduro bike in your eyes?

I have been riding my Strive for a good few months now. The first thing I found was how easy it is to jump onto and just ride. Really comfortable angles and linkage. For enduro a light bike is important and I have been planning my race bike this week. I can’t wait to get on my super light rocket ship once it’s built!

Enduro is tough on the body for sure, so how do you keep yourself in shape?

I started working with a trainer last October and things have been going really well. I feel I have got a good balance between effort and rest, gym and road and never forgetting my trusty mountain bike and skills practice.

What would you be doing if you weren’t a mountain bike pro?
It’s a tricky one as I have always ridden my bike and worked in a bike shop, as that’s all I have wanted to do. I am engineering minded so this was always an option for me, but I think a bit of everything is best. A self employed chief. Film making, handy work and bike mechanic ,with lots of spare time for having fun.

A life without the bike is like…?
Not worth thinking about. Two wheels is the best thing ever.

Thanx!
