Joaquim Purito Rodríguez came within centimetres of being World Champion in Tuscany on Sunday. After an epic 270km race in rain, thunder and lightning, Purito made the crucial final split on the hilly course around Florence.
After attacking several times in the last 5km it looked like he’d done enough for a legendary solo win, but Portugal’s Rui Costa caught him with 600m to go. After almost 7 hours in the saddle the two went head to head in the sprint and Purito just missed out on a dream victory and instead was left to wipe away tears in the podium.
We pay our huge respects to his performance not only in the World Championships but all season long, you made us proud. Congratulations Joaquim! Grande Purito!
