Vuelta 2012: Purito further extends his lead in the general classification

Numerous fans at the roadside fired him on. It was a home game for the 33-year old Catalan and he successfully capitalized on this advantage. On stage 9 Joaquím Rodríguez again delivered an excellent performance on his Canyon Aeroad CF and was able to further extend his lead in the overall classification.
On the 196 kilometer stage from Andorra to Barcelona he only had to admit defeat to Philippe Gilbert, who was able to scoop his first win of the season.

“I’m so moved”, said the Catalan at the finish. “I know all this from when I trained here as a junior rider and now I’m standing here on the podium as leader in the general classification of the Vuelta a España and the enthusiasm is simply unbelievable”.
The stage wasn’t so testing according to Purito. The 33-year old from Barcelona also added that the breakaway had come together very rapidly. “The only danger was from the riders aiming for overall victory who are still fit”, explained Rodriguez and added, “But I’m very satisfied with the outcome of the stage”.
After yesterday’s transfer from Barcelona today is the first rest day. On Tuesday the action restarts in Galicia with a relatively flat stage. On Wednesday the first and only individual time-trial in this year’s Vuelta takes place. At the halfway point of the approximately 40 kilometer time-trial course the riders must overcome the 490m high Monte Castrove. It’s expected to be an exciting stage.

We’ll be keeping our fingers crossed for Katusha and Purito and are looking forward to a fantastic performance from the fastest time-trial bike in the world the Speedmax CF Evo!
