Champions of Europe – Alban Lakata and the Grand Canyon CF SLX

Terrific weekend for the Topeak-Ergon Racing Team and Canyon. Alban Lakata became European champion for the second time, Sally Bigham won silver and new recruit Nadine Rieder sprinted her way to bronze in the XCE sprint competition. Cape Epic unlucky boy Robert Mennen achieved an outstanding 12th place after a long spell out with injury.

After a victory at the Riva Marathon last week Alban Lakata felt as if he could ride his way into the medals at the European marathon championship in Singen. However, even he couldn’t have believed that it would be gold. “I fancied my chances of gaining a medal here, but never thought I could scoop the European title on such an undulating course and against rivals of this calibre”, explained the newly crowned European champion.

After his European title of 2008 and gold at the world championships in 2010, this latest European title “Albanator” is no coincidence. “It was simply time for a win again. Besides, I’m extremely motivated whenever my friends and fans are on the course driving me on and also the status of mountain bike sport is very high in Germany now.”

Third silver medal for Sally
The Topeak-Ergon ladies rider Sally Bigham also made positive headlines. In spite of a stubborn cold she dictated the race from the off. On the second climb she positioned herself at the head of the leading trio. After 28 kilometres the leading trio had already opened up a two minute gap on the rest of the field. Sabine Spitz was dropped and the race was now a dual between Esther Süss und Sally Bigham. At the end Sally had to be content with a very creditable second place.

Bronze in the sprint for Nadine
Nadine Rieder also caused a bit of a stir at the German championships in the Eliminator-Sprint competition by winning a bronze medal. However, the 23-year old from Sonthofen wasn’t at first really able to enjoy her third place. “If I’m honest, I was expecting a bit more”, said Nadine for the record. But then she looked to the future. “Oh well, now I’m looking forward to my first sprint world cup this coming Friday.”

We are really happy for the new European Champion Alban Lakata and the successes of the entire Topeak-Ergon Racing Team.
Next week the action continues when the first Weltcup of the 2013 season takes place and the Swabian Jura awaits the world’s best riders in Albstadt.
